Contemporary embroidery design is reliant on clean lines, but there are a limited number of outline stitches that achieve such lines – back, stem... A new one for me that works really well is cable stitch:
Not only do I love the way this stitch looks, I also love the way it “flows” as you’re doing it. The motion is similar to stem stitch, but seems smoother somehow. If you haven’t done it before, give it a try and you’ll see what I mean.

The other thing I really like about cable stitch is that it has the ability to give you a nice, thick line of stitching without you having to use that many strands of thread, as it doubles up on itself. I used three strands of DMC six-stranded cotton thread in the embroidery above, but have also stitched with all six strands before for a really standout effect.
