Moving to a new online homeI started Materialistic in April 2008 on a whim, knowing only that I wanted to share my passion for needlework and in particular hand embroidery. I've come a long way since then.<br />
<br />
As my pattern business started and began to grow, it became somewhere I could showcase my new designs. I put together a few stitch tutorials that I hope helped someone, somewhere. I shared the experience of my first time teaching at an embroidery festival on this blog. And I showed my vintage stitch book finds, gave away free designs and sometimes just rambled on about embroidery, sewing or crochet and life in general.<br />
<br />
But times change and the past few months since I finished putting together my book have been ones of reflection on where I'm at and how I'd like to move forward. Mostly this involved thinking about how to streamline my online presence and how best to manage my time, which was part of the reason for wanting to simplify things.<br />
<br />
One of the outcomes of this line of thinking was a move away from my blog. There's always a bit of gut-wrenching involved in such a decision, but it feels like the right time to do it. I'm not going to delete Materialistic either, as there are some decent posts here along with the Stitch Directory.<br />
<br />
The good news is that instead of blogging, I've begun sending out a monthly newsletter, which you can <a href="http://kellyfletcher.blogspot.co.za/2009/04/jacobean-leaves-embroidery-pattern-2-of.html" target="_blank">subscribe to and read past editions of in the letter archive</a>. It's a more personal and in-depth account of the goings-on behind the scenes. And I've created a <a href="http://www.kellyfletcher.co.za/news/" target="_blank">news page on my new website</a> where you'll find up-to-date info on patterns and projects. (If you use a news or feed reader, I've set up <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/News-KellyFletcherNeedleworkDesign" target="_blank">an RSS feed</a> to make it easy for you to stay up to date with this news.) Otherwise you can follow/like <a href="http://www.kellyfletcher.co.za/" target="_blank">Kelly Fletcher Needlework Design</a> on <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/kellylfletcher/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kelly-Fletcher-Needlework-Design/240711562616851" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/KFNeedlework" target="_blank">Twitter</a>.<br />

<br />
And I've set up a <a href="https://feedly.com/" target="_blank">Feedly feed reader account</a> so I can easily keep following my favourite blogs that way.<br />
<br />
Looking back over the stats for Materialistic, it was interesting to see which of my posts were the most popular. So to end off on a celebratory note, here's a list of the top 10 most viewed posts as of today:<br />

But my book is finally here, on shelves and ready for you to get stitching! (Embroiderers in South Africa, you’re going to have to wait another month to get your hands on a copy locally.)<br />

Some of the sketches for my Wild Grass and Wild Pods patterns were too “feathery” for those patterns, and so the idea of a third design of ferns came about. </div>
<br /><div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdrx2w0sY0ekzupFdEwqXa2arhY0ab0zJGlIvJaZazj29Lkc2xpQHupfvIYRfp-ap18Nqx1C3wMENL0MmznI5iaWeq_YK4pLS0YOPXb20qIAi3urQcxjC01V73d6reT9BcqliEADYw-182/s1600/WildFernsA_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdrx2w0sY0ekzupFdEwqXa2arhY0ab0zJGlIvJaZazj29Lkc2xpQHupfvIYRfp-ap18Nqx1C3wMENL0MmznI5iaWeq_YK4pLS0YOPXb20qIAi3urQcxjC01V73d6reT9BcqliEADYw-182/s400/WildFernsA_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />The tendrils and fronds in bright emerald greens made more and more of an impact as I embroidered – it was the first time I’d used these particular greens and I have to say I’m really rather pleased with how Wild Ferns turned out. <br /><br />And now there’s a neat set of three, to use on rectangular cushions, as wall art or embroidered on to a set of café curtains, perhaps. And the colours are really easy to switch by simply matching light for light and dark for dark.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">

The sketches for some of the pods in this design had been sitting on a folded up sheet of paper stuck into the back flap of a sketchbook for almost five years, waiting for the right design idea to come along. That idea came along around the same time as my <a href="http://kellyfletcher.blogspot.co.za/2015/06/wild-grass-modern-hand-embroidery.html" target="_blank">Wild Grass pattern</a> – some of the individual plant ideas were too pod-like and branched off on to a separate page that fitted well with the older sketches.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBa1bvkXvVbQwPgyLIVzaX5P61h6PlPWl7432EKk2SxLKrhM1WUanRNLW_qLRvZeTLC8nn5KIq4flzf4OwNzgyuhAbCdFct0kSRKfdzbEMpVmM0EfaOa7TnZknqDu76hzAli5G9T_R_aLA/s1600/WildPods_Sketches_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="172" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBa1bvkXvVbQwPgyLIVzaX5P61h6PlPWl7432EKk2SxLKrhM1WUanRNLW_qLRvZeTLC8nn5KIq4flzf4OwNzgyuhAbCdFct0kSRKfdzbEMpVmM0EfaOa7TnZknqDu76hzAli5G9T_R_aLA/s400/WildPods_Sketches_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

I loved the horizontal layout of the grasses and so created Wild Pods to the same dimensions. <br />

<br />
Some of the colours used in the pattern – the rusty reds – I’d not used before. And two or three of the stitch ideas were also new to me, fortunately they all worked out according to plan.<br />
<br />
Like Wild Grass, the variety of stitches in Wild Pods kept the embroidery fun and interesting to do. And the finished work stayed true to my aim of a fresh and modern design in slightly unusual, but striking colours.<br />

The idea of creating texture using various embroidery stitches had been on my mind for a while and I was just waiting for the right design idea to pop into my head, when I realised it had been staring me in the face the whole time. There’s a bowl of vintage wooden spools of sewing cotton on the bookshelf next to my desk, which I’ve picked up in various charity shops and thrift stores over time.</div>
<br /><div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwmNl98KVFhTl9NmKdD-BEVJ24hGmxzzJC_KSChgV7RGZQVO1r3-kHVl0TxCPUGg5oR068_dRy2v5xPCcCRbu7IzoJaxDCcjb4dsVMa5hqKEwnYqK57K95ZI6ltcIK0LfmjN-Yn83Kyp4i/s1600/WoodenCottonReels_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwmNl98KVFhTl9NmKdD-BEVJ24hGmxzzJC_KSChgV7RGZQVO1r3-kHVl0TxCPUGg5oR068_dRy2v5xPCcCRbu7IzoJaxDCcjb4dsVMa5hqKEwnYqK57K95ZI6ltcIK0LfmjN-Yn83Kyp4i/s400/WoodenCottonReels_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />They’re perfect for holding textured “thread” and small enough to do multiple versions in a single design. I love the reels worked in a grid pattern – you could repeat the grid to experiment with even more thread texture – but you could also rearrange them to create a border or use one as a single motif with your favourite stitch.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRttOBY0vrUNyByn6VQRDkNkjD3qh7vd5Amo5yZEedQd9GD77qij6PGgqsTD4bvI7FZjg4T0MPU5eeKcgrRQ4VWOpYs7kVI8ihlgRGGq94yRGj2M_kquG4fe3S-kMQoU0e9_Qkb3q1gY_X/s1600/CottonReels1_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRttOBY0vrUNyByn6VQRDkNkjD3qh7vd5Amo5yZEedQd9GD77qij6PGgqsTD4bvI7FZjg4T0MPU5eeKcgrRQ4VWOpYs7kVI8ihlgRGGq94yRGj2M_kquG4fe3S-kMQoU0e9_Qkb3q1gY_X/s400/CottonReels1_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

It gave me a good starting point for the rest of the textured stitching detail on the wings and feelers.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8_PeIeaiUgHX53JmgcDDbN12JDJalyFUlksKInPNNUGrRWwaCLCMxlIO7SJi-dnRVWq9ZYkI8SoDhJ42cKcw933p-4nF-lmWmgxSgKcYr_0VdXs29GjTsXEAJWvolEOYUtpLCbVwBu7xw/s1600/AnatomicalMoth_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8_PeIeaiUgHX53JmgcDDbN12JDJalyFUlksKInPNNUGrRWwaCLCMxlIO7SJi-dnRVWq9ZYkI8SoDhJ42cKcw933p-4nF-lmWmgxSgKcYr_0VdXs29GjTsXEAJWvolEOYUtpLCbVwBu7xw/s400/AnatomicalMoth_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Similarly, I’ve wanted to use this collection of muted, almost antique-looking thread colours in a design for a while now, and they sprang to mind as soon as I started working on the moth. They feel well-suited to the anatomical nature of the design.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOWAOreNcqA-G0t0VFcoSCpteW4H6W3lZzcuOoxXTT7gAyKf04V9HRZBE0citzDdsy-SKdZuDutpPugIXAMUWwwy5JaL5zD2f8bJYJmeTXAP50z_hGRDD6jX3IkcP6HGOoXIcMHf1R6pP/s1600/AnatomicalMothEmbroideryPatternE_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOWAOreNcqA-G0t0VFcoSCpteW4H6W3lZzcuOoxXTT7gAyKf04V9HRZBE0citzDdsy-SKdZuDutpPugIXAMUWwwy5JaL5zD2f8bJYJmeTXAP50z_hGRDD6jX3IkcP6HGOoXIcMHf1R6pP/s400/AnatomicalMothEmbroideryPatternE_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The moth was a natural fit with my small collection of existing Anatomical designs and so I though I should add a butterfly to the range at the same time – a duo of winged creatures.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Axu_OXTY44J-IZoqQh4Q1GWGLm-1CyDRUBl7-Lvl0kDzjirVbYFXFFwr1-F_nSC30NHHS9DSfdv5kJssBsGOPkk6HwLDh_CN0zTxgSi9KmtXP8H0WM_Ngp7Wkh5CJIgrI2NL-AQqz63I/s1600/AnatomicalButterfly_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Axu_OXTY44J-IZoqQh4Q1GWGLm-1CyDRUBl7-Lvl0kDzjirVbYFXFFwr1-F_nSC30NHHS9DSfdv5kJssBsGOPkk6HwLDh_CN0zTxgSi9KmtXP8H0WM_Ngp7Wkh5CJIgrI2NL-AQqz63I/s400/AnatomicalButterfly_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The <a href="http://www.brentonblue.org.za/" target="_blank">Brenton Blue butterfly</a> from Knysna along South Africa’s southern coast inspired my thread colour choices and I experienced a small thrill of satisfaction when my idea for stitching the black and white edges of the wings worked out as I’d envisioned on the first try (this definitely isn’t always the case).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQP6p7vDgGvLWfSSgUOx5q01Ld_QKH5J6JCn8sW58eQXqOi6ZO8bW4DwcJdyydNcuylnyWgkBk6cSfAs3yZeM1h23dZOE_SJRLH2dTiTA-QxHRwy_Qq-1FWhFg_jdHnMP5MGWTGKcOSUah/s1600/AnatomicalButterflyEmbroideryPattern_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQP6p7vDgGvLWfSSgUOx5q01Ld_QKH5J6JCn8sW58eQXqOi6ZO8bW4DwcJdyydNcuylnyWgkBk6cSfAs3yZeM1h23dZOE_SJRLH2dTiTA-QxHRwy_Qq-1FWhFg_jdHnMP5MGWTGKcOSUah/s400/AnatomicalButterflyEmbroideryPattern_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There are a nice variety of stitches in both designs and you can see how to do them all in either my <a href="http://kellyfletcher.blogspot.com/p/stitch-directory.html" target="_blank">Stitch Directory</a> or on my <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/kellylfletcher/stitches/" target="_blank">Stitches board on Pinterest</a>.<br />

There are lots of walking paths criss-crossing the area, so I’d gathered a collection of shots of the different wild grasses that grow alongside these pathways through the seasons.<br />
<br />
While the grasses in this pattern aren’t true to the real-life versions, those photos sparked the sketches that then became the design. As with almost all my ideas, the stitches come first and so the details have been worked out to accommodate a variety of textural hand embroidery stitches – cast-ons, bullions, knots and so on – rather than depict the individual grasses as they appear in nature. The overall effect is remarkably similar though.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF5ZFwMYKnyfa7UOVrtht7wOu9M21Fc7GE3yJR8_6TDzhm4WdqR-vJOfOwo-niO1UV5k6tKScoxRrdZkuqTr_rr-SGqVAMrjB3OhseRLcHs_urPiXZkebsoLGyRsA3-RQhux5Zk8HcTAaU/s1600/WildGrass1_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF5ZFwMYKnyfa7UOVrtht7wOu9M21Fc7GE3yJR8_6TDzhm4WdqR-vJOfOwo-niO1UV5k6tKScoxRrdZkuqTr_rr-SGqVAMrjB3OhseRLcHs_urPiXZkebsoLGyRsA3-RQhux5Zk8HcTAaU/s400/WildGrass1_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Using a variety of stitches helped me steer clear of potential boredom while sticking with just a few thread colours. (In fact, this design was particularly fun to stitch.) And using shades of grey and white rather than traditional browns and greens gives the embroidery a fresh, modern feel.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuwjN7q2hJ3XImR5gqRvGDyqd20hIb6U4bzzlVISNAoRskMqlYCGPwrbE1frGVUVolN42OfBxTO7c57Ub1CGMZ09l7hvWsz2NJ6PYOcYcgK6giV_HTq4dWettohmiSW1ZshqguACdjbQ47/s1600/WildGrass2_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuwjN7q2hJ3XImR5gqRvGDyqd20hIb6U4bzzlVISNAoRskMqlYCGPwrbE1frGVUVolN42OfBxTO7c57Ub1CGMZ09l7hvWsz2NJ6PYOcYcgK6giV_HTq4dWettohmiSW1ZshqguACdjbQ47/s400/WildGrass2_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It’s a classic design that’d work well framed as wall art or sewn up into a rectangular feature cushion for a living or bedroom. And it’d be easy to replace the colours to suit your taste.</div>

I liked the ornateness of the letters, which obviously made me think immediately of embroidery stitches. <div>
<br /><div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTrFwIsuISXvY6KH1J7YdwQWzIcQ5j7n5el27PC4S1BWQuZ2KVJ77Mu-6-R38XnErYcNuzQb9dnu_uCq-5JaBxx9k4u4qnBD5kye1f9lX3YsoG0As6uVaR-EvsRou4kUJNvooT67Bopsn1/s1600/DecoAlphabet_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTrFwIsuISXvY6KH1J7YdwQWzIcQ5j7n5el27PC4S1BWQuZ2KVJ77Mu-6-R38XnErYcNuzQb9dnu_uCq-5JaBxx9k4u4qnBD5kye1f9lX3YsoG0As6uVaR-EvsRou4kUJNvooT67Bopsn1/s400/DecoAlphabet_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
The design is more of a nod to this style of early 20th century lettering than a true Art Deco alphabet, as I’ve taken liberties that allowed me to incorporate different stitches to make the embroidery interesting and fun to do. </div>
<div>

I have two new embroidery patterns out that particularly those of you with kids, grandchildren or a baby on the way might like to embroider.</div>
<br />
ABC is an alphabet with images of items beginning with their corresponding letter – A is for apple, M is for mushroom and O is for owl. And 123 features the numbers 0 to 9 with the relevant number of items alongside – 1 butterfly, 2 leaves and 7 fish.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8b23JO3GpQrwXZdXEgysCxNaPpH1yLlOOea2ryKHqYi3L5pEtlnLn0g7Km3m3O6qhfk1gQHjMoyXhDkKzqPl5HuJdSgXY5zC4hMvx35ZAa846IfJWxuCZdFlFMju7K-UJY9l_jeh9Ugsh/s1600/ABCEmbroideryPattern1_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8b23JO3GpQrwXZdXEgysCxNaPpH1yLlOOea2ryKHqYi3L5pEtlnLn0g7Km3m3O6qhfk1gQHjMoyXhDkKzqPl5HuJdSgXY5zC4hMvx35ZAa846IfJWxuCZdFlFMju7K-UJY9l_jeh9Ugsh/s400/ABCEmbroideryPattern1_KellyFletcher.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The patterns are contemporary in design to fit in with a baby nursery or kids’ bedroom décor, where they have educational value too.<br />
<div>

<br />
Sonia Lucano's book, <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8774479-made-in-france" target="_blank"><i>Blackwork: Fifty Simple Embroidery Projects in Traditional Black and White</i></a>, is inspiring though, with its fresh and modern take on the style – and projects of a manageable size. This and a desire to learn new embroidery styles prompted me to pick a project and find out if blackwork could hold my interest.<br />
<br />

<br />
There's no need to transfer the design on to the fabric, which is a plus. Simply start in the middle of the design and work your way outwards by following the pattern grid. I made a copy of the design from the book so I could draw crosshairs on it...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbZicvibCiKK-PRVZK4N464RY6WgYSlBtjph5GJvLTsipP9_LrkSLqQMs3k4S_m2hTCyLqk30oYCuRaA_mwjMcTN4_jE90ZZ0AwIiGCAlXtnnjUUufegnDTwWt8Lx377pxI72NiCeEXk8/s1600/Blackwork3_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbZicvibCiKK-PRVZK4N464RY6WgYSlBtjph5GJvLTsipP9_LrkSLqQMs3k4S_m2hTCyLqk30oYCuRaA_mwjMcTN4_jE90ZZ0AwIiGCAlXtnnjUUufegnDTwWt8Lx377pxI72NiCeEXk8/s1600/Blackwork3_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
... and tacked matching crosshairs on to the fabric to make it easier to keep my place.<br />
<br />
So that's the prep work done. Next, making a start on the embroidery.<br />
<br />

Free vintage embroidery designs<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
I came across a file of vintage iron-on embroidery transfers at a charity shop towards the end of last year. They were clearly someone's collection: gathered over the years, cut up and piled haphazardly, one on top of the other into plastic sleeves. It saddens me to think of the stitching life discarded, but I can't deny the thrill of coming across a stash like this.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
We were experiencing power load shedding every other evening at the time, and I spent these hours sifting through and sorting the transfers by candlelight. I had to toss a lot of them - torn, crumpled, faded - but those that were left quickly worked their way into little piles of commonality and I thought I'd share my good fortune.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
They're literally just outlines, though, no instructions or photos of finished embroidery. So you'll have to get creative. But a decent design is a good place to start and I thought these small marine motifs apt with all the nautical themes doing the rounds at the moment.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
Suggested stitches: Outline the hull of the boat in stem stitch and fill the mast in with satin stitch. Embroider the sails and the sea in back stitch, using more strands of thread for the sails than the sea to give a thicker line. You could place a French knot under each wave curl for added detail.</div>

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
Suggested stitches: Embroider the bubbles in padded satin or outline them in back stitch with two straight stitches in the centre of each. Outline the fish in stem stitch and use a French or colonial knot for the eye. Use the left-hand design for appliqué: embroider or attach a bead for the eye, cut out the fish and notch the fabric where shown, then fold the edges under and hand stitch to another piece of fabric.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
Suggested stitches: Fill the sail with blanket filling stitch and outline it in stem stitch. Embroider the hull and mast in thick back stitch and the sea swells in stem stitch using only a few strands of thread. Fly or arrowhead stitch would work well for the birds and satin stitch for the flag.</div>

It's been quite blissful, and relaxing once all the preparation work was complete and I could just sit and stitch.<br />
<br />
I'm taken care of for the next while, but if <i>you're</i> on the lookout for new projects to kick off the year and haven't yet gotten hold of a copy of Embroidery Ideas, it's now also available as a digital edition on US platform <a href="http://www.zinio.com/www/browse/product.jsp?rf=sch&productId=500996209" target="_blank">Zinio</a>.<br />

With 20 projects comprising 36 different designs, there's bound to be something that appeals to you. And at just $6.49, there's really no reason not to indulge.<br />
<br />
Other than that, life gets back to normal next week and I'm feeling rather excited and positive about what 2015 may bring. Hopefully it's a good year for us all.<br />

It's been a busy one for me, working not only on designs for my online shops but also on some big editorial projects. You know about Embroidery Ideas, but there's more in the pipeline that I'll be able to share with you next year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgklnDOaHa7W-J81peHt_1xpAxHtz1ghHtnzKNI3_M4lK4HxFGFdv6PLinTQussrhvLCKpbXEH_8lKh-xqm3RmMxtzV1rXeKY9oDqA0NuuBv3B5YkQu5BHQG_BTQZUu-c1TYCPxepV_ljs7/s1600/Christmas2014_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgklnDOaHa7W-J81peHt_1xpAxHtz1ghHtnzKNI3_M4lK4HxFGFdv6PLinTQussrhvLCKpbXEH_8lKh-xqm3RmMxtzV1rXeKY9oDqA0NuuBv3B5YkQu5BHQG_BTQZUu-c1TYCPxepV_ljs7/s1600/Christmas2014_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="271" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You've also been busy, buying more embroidery patterns and editions of The Stitch & Thimble from me than in any other year so far. And so Christmas is also the perfect opportunity to thank you for your support, friendly emails, positive product reviews and compliments on my work. It's all very much appreciated and it's a lovely feeling to think my designs are being embroidered and enjoyed all over the world.<br />
<br />
This year was the first time I'd attended an embroidery festival, never mind taught at one. Ighali 2014 was a great experience, thanks to the ladies from the PE Embroidery Guild who slaved away to make it all happen. It's inspired me to come up with more ideas for workshops: watch this space.<br />
<br />
To those of you who decided to give hand embroidery a go this year, stick with it and you won't be disappointed - I hope to see you coming back for more next year.<br />
<br />
And to the editors, creative directors, publishers, photographers, stylists and other editorial team members who worked so hard to make my embroidery look so good, thank you!<br />
<br />
Happy holidays and the very best of festive seasons to you. See you in 2015.Kelly Fletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16339322891412243381noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4829948620859455677.post-40752021431103847662014-12-16T06:08:00.000+00:002014-12-16T06:08:14.793+00:00Embroidery Ideas magazine : the digital versionThe digital version of Embroidery Ideas is now available and you can buy a copy no matter where in the world you live. <div>
<br /><br />If there’s anything you’ve had your eye on, Monday is the time to buy it. The holiday season is tantalisingly close and there's plenty to choose from, whether you’re looking for festive designs to stitch or an embroidery project to work on over the holidays. <br /><br />The sale runs from the evening of Sunday, 30 November to the morning of Tuesday, 2 December (SA time, GMT +2). This should give you all a chance to shop on 1 December, irrespective of which time zone you live in. And you can follow me on <a href="https://twitter.com/KFNeedlework" target="_blank">Twitter</a> or like my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kelly-Fletcher-Needlework-Design/240711562616851" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> for live updates on the sale.<br /><ul>
<li>To shop on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/KFNeedleworkDesign" target="_blank">Etsy</a>, add all the items you’d like to buy to your shopping cart and enter the coupon code KFNDCYBERMONDAY2014 when you check out to get 25% off your total spend. For more info on how to apply the coupon code, read <a href="http://www.etsy.com/help/article/350?ref=help_search_result" target="_blank">here</a>. Please note that I have to manually relist items on Etsy, so if you find the pattern you’re after is marked as “sold out” you can either hang in there and give me a chance to renew it (bearing in mind that it may well be the middle of the night here in Johannesburg, in which case I’ll be up early to renew items) or try my Craftsy shop, where the items renew automatically. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>If you prefer to shop on <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/1362814/pattern-store" target="_blank">Craftsy</a>, the price shown will already have 25% taken off with the usual price in the product description for comparison.</li>
</ul>
<ul>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdqS4cSmZ22HSrTupXNn5I_Wb89i1RfAILZg5-B2LCZu7Eu3xTmvNdayIqQZ1NbNSmvBOA4BphV6yA1MXZkiOUdDuK1O7zCwX0omDxA7Uofgt7ofFAFsMFKrX4dnSgPfivivl7bq6oN5sY/s1600/StitchingListens_Picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdqS4cSmZ22HSrTupXNn5I_Wb89i1RfAILZg5-B2LCZu7Eu3xTmvNdayIqQZ1NbNSmvBOA4BphV6yA1MXZkiOUdDuK1O7zCwX0omDxA7Uofgt7ofFAFsMFKrX4dnSgPfivivl7bq6oN5sY/s1600/StitchingListens_Picture.jpg" height="246" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I listened to some entertaining interviews a little while ago in which embroidery and textiles obviously feature. And as I've recently started embroidering again for another big project, I'm catching up on podcasts.<br />
<br />
Here are six good ones, in no particular order:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://threadcult.com/2013/02/14/episode-9-lotta-jansdotters-scandinavian-style/">Lotta Jansdotter speaks to Christine Cyr Clisset</a> <br />
Known for her clean style, <a href="http://jansdotter.com/" target="_blank">Lotta Jansdotter</a> was way ahead of her time when it came to the Scandi design trend, so it was interesting to hear about her design process, collaborations and future plans. It was also interesting to hear her take on designing versus production, and on which she felt her time was best spent.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://whileshenaps.com/2014/11/podcast-episode-36-alicia-paulson-arianne-foulks-aeolidia.html" target="_blank">Arianne Foulks and Alicia Paulson speak to Abby Glassenberg</a><br />
<a href="http://aliciapaulson.com/" target="_blank">Alicia Paulson</a> of <a href="http://www.posiegetscozy.com/" target="_blank">Posy Gets Cozy</a> completely overhauled her online presence recently, including a new logo. And she got Arianne Foulks of web and graphic design studio <a href="http://aeolidia.com/" target="_blank">Aeolidia</a> to do it for her. It's a frank and honest talk about when, how and if a craft business owner should take on a redesign, and what exactly a website will or will not do for your bottom line.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://threadcult.com/2013/09/26/episode-23-modern-patchwork-with-denyse-schmidt/" target="_blank">Denyse Schmidt speaks to Christine Cyr Clisset</a><br />
A maker of modern quilts, <a href="http://dsquilts.com/" target="_blank">Denyse Schmidt</a> has been on my radar for years. I love the simplicity of her quilt designs and am inspired by the way she's gone about creating and sustaining her quilt business.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_520_-_claire_danes" target="_blank">Claire Danes speaks to Marc Maron</a><br />
Although this interview with <a href="http://www.wtfpod.com/" target="_blank">Marc Maron</a> is largely about Claire's upbringing and acting career, there's an unexpected twist in the second half where she speaks about taking up embroidery and getting involved with her make-up artist friend Matin Maulawizada's venture to uplift widows in Afghanistan through embroidery, called <a href="http://www.afghanhands.org/" target="_blank">Afghan Hands</a>. So even though it's not a needlework or even a craft podcast, it was a nice easy listen to a fellow embroiderer.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://whileshenaps.com/2014/10/kathy-mack-and-kristin-link.html" target="_blank">Kristin Link and Kathy Mack speak to Abby Glassenberg</a><br />
Kristin Link is the founder and owner of <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/" target="_blank">Sew Mama Sew</a> and Kathy Mack is the owner of <a href="http://www.pinkchalkfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Pink Chalk Fabrics</a>. Both of them have had to make tough business decisions involving a fairly radical change in direction. They talk candidly about making financial decisions, the emotions involved in changing tack and the day-to-day of running a craft business.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://threadcult.com/2013/01/13/episode-4-the-story-behind-spoonflower/" target="_blank">Spoonflower's Stephen Fraser speaks to Christine Cyr Clisset</a><br />
If you're not already familiar with <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/welcome" target="_blank">Spoonflower</a>, they're digital textile printers from North Carolina that'll print your designs on to as little as a yard of fabric at a time. This is a fascinating listen about how Stephen and his partner, Gart Davis, started the business and what it's done for indie fabric designers since launching.<br />
<br />
So there you go, some good listens if you're so inclined.<br />

Stem stitch is one of the most basic embroidery stitches and used frequently in different styles of embroidery. Its “sister” stitch, outline stitch, looks extremely similar, but the difference comes in when actually doing these two stitches. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqGeAoXHKMli6uu4KFWuBLpeXaUqpVgGU8Ry6Y4qiHhywRY-Tx8x9CM8d05YUu_ARqCehQb7zyBwRQ4UPi9dp8Pb-jWqADeuawoPx2sI0v4AVj_V8Scrr7Hb21CurUO-3XV3Ui90e9mNQ5/s1600/StemStitch_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqGeAoXHKMli6uu4KFWuBLpeXaUqpVgGU8Ry6Y4qiHhywRY-Tx8x9CM8d05YUu_ARqCehQb7zyBwRQ4UPi9dp8Pb-jWqADeuawoPx2sI0v4AVj_V8Scrr7Hb21CurUO-3XV3Ui90e9mNQ5/s1600/StemStitch_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="285" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Stem stitch is worked with your thread falling below your needle at all times.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwLDFCkOWq28UZQwvKoWzTqSLhpAr_nWoZEEXKDooNACClJwCX5HKxmbi9o5VFR9b857dIlmGyEqiNaQxN-i8QJSX2e-mNvz1gDMgj-BvmqL6AFXbCCeuBeLeQ3tYkBt1UU24WvWgl7ngU/s1600/OutlineStitch_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwLDFCkOWq28UZQwvKoWzTqSLhpAr_nWoZEEXKDooNACClJwCX5HKxmbi9o5VFR9b857dIlmGyEqiNaQxN-i8QJSX2e-mNvz1gDMgj-BvmqL6AFXbCCeuBeLeQ3tYkBt1UU24WvWgl7ngU/s1600/OutlineStitch_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="262" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Outline stitch is done with your thread above your needle at all times.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimhGIkHXDpp5TMM-HHDl6JCvB9R2yW86vgYZHkJtdIW0L1nVG6dPiE2fqBMDjhzu7hxjwv7dmZ_nF0xj5UUKxE13vaNJxMRtl-zw21j9lmfqLQjc5HIUkepEci_64RNKbnuC1oT4Zmbc64/s1600/StemOutline_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimhGIkHXDpp5TMM-HHDl6JCvB9R2yW86vgYZHkJtdIW0L1nVG6dPiE2fqBMDjhzu7hxjwv7dmZ_nF0xj5UUKxE13vaNJxMRtl-zw21j9lmfqLQjc5HIUkepEci_64RNKbnuC1oT4Zmbc64/s1600/StemOutline_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="400" width="297" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The end results are remarkably similar; the individual stitches just slant in a different direction: downwards in stem stitch (top) and upwards in outline stitch (bottom).</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmgOthaSxIp2kcO-CkF8Ic4B9JGaDDnG5s3JV4cOJLlModKlrzsMfjaydquKZrh7amuHIMmrfgL-J0QXMab77_qbMidxI9bKUt63VOEzIzli87nrHbi0MfTBnj7HKqOoAvKNpqGmjVz88L/s1600/StemOutlineCurved_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmgOthaSxIp2kcO-CkF8Ic4B9JGaDDnG5s3JV4cOJLlModKlrzsMfjaydquKZrh7amuHIMmrfgL-J0QXMab77_qbMidxI9bKUt63VOEzIzli87nrHbi0MfTBnj7HKqOoAvKNpqGmjVz88L/s1600/StemOutlineCurved_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="376" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Even working along a curved line, there isn’t much difference between the two stitches beyond the angles of the individual stitches. Stem on the top, outline on the bottom curve.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But…</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Have a go at doing the two and you’ll find stem stitch easier to do than outline stitch – well, I find it much easier at any rate. It feels more natural to me and I can see the line I’m working along more easily. The repeated stitch action of stem seems to have a better flow to it, too. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you’re a beginner embroiderer, stem stitch gives a neater end result with less effort. And if you’re using stem stitch to catch down appliquéd fabric, for some reason the end result is neater than if you use outline stitch.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It’s not a scientific fact, just a personal preference, but stem stitch trumps outline stitch any day.</div>
</div>

Remember the rather ambitious <a href="http://kellyfletcher.blogspot.com/2012/10/rain-roses-and-daisies.html" target="_blank">rose and daisy blocks crochet blanket</a> I embarked on two years ago now? It got upscaled by four to an envisioned double-bed blanket and then ... well ... downscaled by four again back to a baby blanket this year. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There'll be a new addition to the family in the form of my niece in a few short months' time and I'd just finished joining all the blocks when we heard my sister was going to have a girl. While I was crocheting the border, I realised it was perfect for a little girl.</div>

Her room is already filling up with embroidered and crocheted owls and flowers and leaves and bunting in delicate shades of lilac and yellow and hopefully this blanket will not only add extra colour, but see her through quite a few years as it's a fairly decent size.</div>

There's also an embroidered owl clock in the making (my mom), so plenty of "made with love" for this new little one. And maybe being surrounded by all this hand stitching will get her wanting to pick up a needle or crochet hook herself one day. One can always hope.</div>

<br />
<i>Ideas</i> is a monthly publication packed with, well, ideas for everything from craft to food to life. And this year they decided to bring out four special standalone editions: <i>Ideas Knitting</i>, <i>Ideas Crochet</i>, <i>Party Ideas for Kids</i> and <i>Ideas Embroidery</i>.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="692" scrolling="no" src="http://instagram.com/p/n8M3dmGUuc/embed/" width="612"></iframe><br />

<br />
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="692" scrolling="no" src="http://instagram.com/p/thY5cHGUmF/embed/" width="612"></iframe><br />
<br />
The first three are already out and <i>Ideas Embroidery</i>, which is where I come in, comes out in early December. There'll be print and digital editions, so I'll keep you posted. And you can pre-order your copy by calling Lucille van der Berg on 021 408 3038 (0027 21 408 3038 from outside SA) or sending Lucille an email: Lucille.vanderBerg@media24.com.<br />
<br />
<i>Ideas Embroidery</i> will be jam-packed with fresh, modern embroidery and sewists will benefit too, as full sewing instructions are included for the various items that I've embroidered. Obviously though, I can't show any photos yet as that would ruin the surprise!<br />
<br />
But my box of embroidered goods made it safely to the Ideas office in Cape Town this week and the talented, anything-is-possible ladies who run the show down there have now taken over.<br />
<br />
Judging by the previous three standalones they've put together, this one should be good!Kelly Fletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16339322891412243381noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4829948620859455677.post-49426371435084401882014-09-12T06:10:00.000+01:002014-09-12T06:10:52.040+01:00Five new Scandinavian style hand embroidery patterns<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the clean, crisp look of Scandinavian design and wanted to try and emulate that with these new patterns. I also wanted to experiment with limited colour palettes - Scandi Birds uses just two shades of blue. To balance things out, I used a variety of different stitches, keeping the designs interesting to embroider.</div>
<br />
There are five designs in the Scandi range - birds, flowers, fruit, hearts and a teapot with teacup - all with a distinctly Scandinavian feel and stitched in bold colours.<br />

One of the advantages of this year’s <a href="http://www.embroiderynetwork.co.za/index.php/news/port-elizabeth-embroiderers-guild/item/ighali-embroidery-festival" target="_blank">Ighali Embroidery Festival</a> being held at <a href="http://www.catholic-pe.co.za/stluke.htm" target="_blank">St Luke’s Retreat and Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth</a> was that we got to see the ecclesiastical embroidery that had been put out on display for the festival. </div>
<br />
The chapel, being a quiet and beautiful place to spend time, was the perfect setting for the embroidered robes. I spent a peaceful half-hour admiring the detailed surface embroidery and goldwork adorning these masterpieces (and enjoying the sunlight streaming through the windows).<br />

So the <a href="http://www.embroiderynetwork.co.za/index.php/news/port-elizabeth-embroiderers-guild/item/ighali-embroidery-festival" target="_blank">Ighali Embroidery Festival 2014</a> has come and gone. And what a great experience. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg74_6rWZvjpKcYJWhOQdS5Ml8XLxM1KJZU6uNqytDcUZD_iIJ7rqRhaNHdi0ItWVYbKCW7MbX9DllCfMXmKREvVobpw9ln20TS4ZYQWFkJLCHIJTjcRSjRDCRohlMbjy7gdoi2_SsNyYMj/s1600/Ighali2014_EmbroideredAppliqueInProgress_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg74_6rWZvjpKcYJWhOQdS5Ml8XLxM1KJZU6uNqytDcUZD_iIJ7rqRhaNHdi0ItWVYbKCW7MbX9DllCfMXmKREvVobpw9ln20TS4ZYQWFkJLCHIJTjcRSjRDCRohlMbjy7gdoi2_SsNyYMj/s1600/Ighali2014_EmbroideredAppliqueInProgress_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
I had a group of six ladies in my embroidered appliqué workshop and we spent a day and a half stitching and nattering about nothing but embroidery and quilting 99% of the time – what a treat to be able to discuss the minutia of stitches and fabric and embroidery paraphernalia with others who are just as passionate about needlework.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3AdcqmOUlfCqBA_I7xrsgjrUQ1WHUhENbDBxQfB4KFiUSJ2wjx1dC8xcvnRBwxkkYuSDEL0OBfgf_WzPzu-OpYberWJtYVA5U94PB9Y4E04RdZLlt1UIdzT6FPwPJFtWXMKrpJG06ZxuW/s1600/Ighali2014_EmbroideredAppliqueGroup_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3AdcqmOUlfCqBA_I7xrsgjrUQ1WHUhENbDBxQfB4KFiUSJ2wjx1dC8xcvnRBwxkkYuSDEL0OBfgf_WzPzu-OpYberWJtYVA5U94PB9Y4E04RdZLlt1UIdzT6FPwPJFtWXMKrpJG06ZxuW/s1600/Ighali2014_EmbroideredAppliqueGroup_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a> </div>
<br />
Lorette and Kim are standing at the back. Lorette, on the left, is from Port Elizabeth and does a lot of quilting (and Pinning). Kim is from Johannesburg and has been embroidering for about 25 years, but was looking for something modern and fresh to stitch. <br />
<br />
Seated, from left to right, are Aneeba, Beryl, Sue and Kathy. Aneeba is originally from Pakistan, but lives just outside Johannesburg now and belongs to the Witwatersrand Embroidery Guild. Beryl lives in Port Elizabeth and is part of the PE Embroidery Guild. Sue came through from Grahamstown for the festival and is a quilter who’s done lots of appliqué. Kathy came down from Joburg with Kim and is a quilter who’s been doing embroidery for about four years, and was likewise looking for something fresh to stitch.<br />

<br />
What a pleasure to spend time in the company of these ladies. And they taught me as much as I taught them, so thank you.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBo4xor1rKPpW88riaayoWvdpETE2wnyYYFtgwdqrsN5reA4Qs0Hm_LNAJP-PFZvnNsO-SXI2zCeMk4alGL2ewwnLzuMGg2XKsP40VsZHENEtilha3AMSdPgWP-wnN1numvR-MKQoT4ohN/s1600/Ighali2014_NameTag_KellyFletcher.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBo4xor1rKPpW88riaayoWvdpETE2wnyYYFtgwdqrsN5reA4Qs0Hm_LNAJP-PFZvnNsO-SXI2zCeMk4alGL2ewwnLzuMGg2XKsP40VsZHENEtilha3AMSdPgWP-wnN1numvR-MKQoT4ohN/s1600/Ighali2014_NameTag_KellyFletcher.jpg" height="290" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Outside of the workshop, it was so nice to meet other embroiderers and some of the other teachers giving classes at the event. I didn’t get to meet all of them sadly, but was thrilled that I got to chat to the likes of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/TRISHBURREMBROIDERY" target="_blank">Trish Burr</a>, <a href="http://www.hazelblomkamp.co/" target="_blank">Hazel Blomkamp</a>, <a href="http://www.pennycornell.co.uk/" target="_blank">Penny Cornell</a> and Odette Wright for a bit.<br />
<br />
The PE Embroidery Guild also put together a great exhibition of embroidery that has inspired me to try out some new techniques and styles, once my workload lightens... I took loads of pics, but will have to break those down into a few different posts, there was so much on show.<br />
<br />
Elsa le Roux and her committee from the PE guild outdid themselves. It was my first time at a big embroidery event like this and I’m rather looking forward to Ighali 2016 now, which the Knysna guild is hosting and organising.<br />
<br />
Elsa is also the driving force behind <a href="http://www.embroiderynetwork.co.za/" target="_blank">Embroidery Network South Africa</a>, an umbrella organisation for all the local SA guilds. The website is full of photos and information, as well as a forum – called Ask and Share – where anyone from around the world can get involved in or start a conversation with other stitchers, so go and take a look at the site when you have a free moment.</div>
